Bearing witness of Jesus Christ through the legal profession in Africa by encouraging and enabling
advocates to meet locally, organize nationally, cooperate regionally and link globally.
The Mission of Advocates AfricaThe continent of Africa is the world's second largest continent after Asia. It has 54 independent countries - 48 mainland and 6 island states - with an estimated total population of 700 million. Advocates International in line with its vision to encourage, enable and equip Christian Lawyers and leaders around the world reached out to Africa in the late 1990’s and the outcome of this outreach was the formation of the African Christian Lawyers Network now known as Advocates Africa.
In 1998 at the AI global convocation in Chicago, only 10 attorneys representing about 5 countries represented Africa. At that time only Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Kenya and Uganda had active Christian lawyer groups, today there are over 19 active or emerging groups in Africa all of which we are in weekly contact with. AI has also successfully helped organize 5 Advocates Africa Regional Conferences held in 5 different countries in Africa.
For purposes of easy identification, administration and monitoring AI categorized Africa into 5 regions namely: Southern Africa, Central Africa, East Africa, West Africa (French and English speaking) and North Africa. AI also appointed coordinators for the different regions (except for the North) to facilitate the growth of Christian lawyers fellowships in those sub-regions.
