February 2009

Dear Friend,

The historic Global Convocation last October launched seven Global Task Forces with each continent taking primary responsibility for a major substantive issue facing believers worldwide.

Our Regional Challenge: Advocates North America, consisting of Canada, the Caribbean and the USA, leads the Global Task Force on Life & Family. North America is on the "cutting edge" undermining the family and the culture of life. Our Canadian colleagues will focus on family issues. Our USA-team will address the broad pro-life and bio-ethics agenda, including abortion, euthanasia and human embryo experimentation.

Growing Dark and Darker: For the first time ever, the White House and Congress are controlled by those unabashedly committed to abortion on demand. Recently, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wanted $300 million for contraceptives added to the $819 billion Stimulus Bill. She said that she is concerned that these children might become a burden to The State. Likewise, addressing Planned Parenthood in July 2007, then-Senator Barack Obama left no doubt where he stands:

"There are many of good will who do not share my view on the issue of choice. On this fundamental issue, I will not yield and Planned Parenthood will not yield...When the real war is being fought abroad, they would have us fight ‘culture wars' here at home. But I am absolutely convinced that culture wars are just so 90s. Their days are growing dark. It is time to turn the page. We want a new day here in America. We're tired of arguing about the same old stuff... The first thing I'd do as President is sign the Freedom of Choice Act."

Losing No Time: President Obama wasted no time implementing his agenda. By Executive Order in his first week, he made hundreds of millions of federal dollars available for international abortions - something Presidents Reagan and Bush I and II had frozen throughout their administrations. Likewise, one of his first nominees to the Department of Justice has been the leading lawyer for the National Association to Repeal all Abortion Laws (NARAL). She will review all judicial nominees and major legal policies. President Obama will likely issue another Executive Order this week pouring millions of tax dollars into human embryo experimentation that will require destroying human embryos. In my 28 years in Washington, I have never seen so much Law by Dictate as I have seen the past three weeks. Constitutional checks and balances are disappearing. But they are writing checks like crazy.

Letter to the President: In the enclosed letter to President Obama , I address 16 positions he took during his campaign and after his election. I apply them to abortion. I am often reminded of Jesus' seven woes to teachers of the law and the Pharisee/politicians who "do not practice what they preach." My hope is that the ideas expressed in my letter may take root somewhere. I have no doubt that we're in for a long drawn-out battle on core values.

Defending the Freedom of Conscience for Physicians, Nurses and Hospitals: Should doctors, nurses and hospitals be penalized for refusing to perform abortions because their religious convictions say it is wrong? America has always protected health professionals and hospitals who oppose abortion as a matter of conscience. These freedoms are now under attack. I am reminded of Germany in the 1930s.

A few weeks ago, the attorney generals for eight of the most liberal States, including Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Rhode Island and California, sued the federal government to strike down the freedom of conscience regulations. Since the new Department of Justice philosophically agrees with these States' positions, we may have a "Sweetheart Lawsuit" where the feds simply cave. In view of this, Advocates North America's Global Task Force on Life has mobilized a small platoon of highly competent lawyers who will help us in this crucial litigation (see Press Release).

Welcome, 2nd Samuel: Sam Casey and I have worked hand-in-hand on religious freedom, pro-life and related issues since 1987. Sam clerked for California's Supreme Court in the 1970s. While a partner with a major California law firm in the 1980s, Sam provided pro bono services to many pro-life advocates much to the chagrin of some of his partners and their pro-abortion clients. He was told to stop, or get out. He got out.

During 1994-2008, Sam served as the Executive Director of Christian Legal Society. In Christian lawyer circles, I'm known as "1st Samuel" and he's "2nd Samuel." He has served as Advocates' Vice Chairman of the Board since 2002 and traveled to four continents for us. As of January 1, 2009, after 14 years at CLS, Sam 2 joined our team as our Executive Vice President and General Counsel. I am thrilled to have someone as my right arm who has been in the trenches for 30 years. We share the same passions for pro-life, religious freedom, peace & reconciliation, the rule of law and mentoring the next generation. Sam 2 is helping us get the seven Global Task Forces launched. He is also mobilizing Advocates North America. Welcome, 2nd Samuel!

God's Amazing Provision: Last month I shared about our $240,000 year-end shortfall due to the Convocation and the economy. I asked for "Help!" God is providing in amazing ways! Many of you responded generously. Thank you!! We received a $50,000 gift from a widow who died in December. Her parents had been missionaries to Asia. She understood what happens when doors are closed to missions. The Hyatt Hotel will reduce the Convocation bill by nearly $50,000 if we pay them by mid-March. We almost have enough funds to do this. A friend of pro-life made a $60,000 challenge gift to match your gifts dollar-for-dollar for our new battles. If every person reading this letter sent a $75 gift, all bills would be paid, the challenge gift met and we'd have a little left over, while...

P.S. Thank you for praying for my scheduled cancer surgery. In 2008, I got careless with parts of my cancer-fighting lifestyle. "He who knows what is right and does not do it, to him it is sin." James 4:17. I'm back 100% on the program. We've seen dramatic results. The doctor agreed to put off the surgery. He will scope me in April. I expect to be well by then!
