Gregory Vijayendran continues with the following news from Israel:

2009 Advocates Asia Conference in Malaysia Friday, September 18

Gregory Vijayendran, coordinator of the Advocates Asia Prayer Calendar, shares on the coming 2009 Advocates Asia Conference in Malaysia on 27-28 November 2009:

“Let us continue to uphold the organizing committee of the next AA Conference to be held on 27-28 November 2009. According to an e-mail received from the organizers: ‘The theme for the Conference is “Living the Micah Mandate Today” based on Micah 6:8 (“What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God”). In particular the Conference will be focusing on the issues of Human Trafficking (including human organ trafficking) and Religious Liberty. There will be a variety of local and foreign speakers. We expect the sessions to be informative and personal with break-out sessions to formulate affirmative actions to be taken so that we can and will move beyond just talking at the conference.’
Praise God for Malaysian Christian lawyers’ heart of generosity, hospitality and sacrificial service for the rest of Asia! Pray for the organizing committee - for God’s continued anointing, leading and wisdom (James 1:5)…”

Message from Mats and Jennifer Tunehag Thursday, September 17

Mats Tunehag (Sweden), member of the Global Council of Advocates International, has willingly shared with us the latest update from his wife, Jennifer Tunehag, on her international work engaged against prostitution and human trafficking, developing international partnerships of churches and organisations and serving victims of prostitution and human trafficking. Jennifer’s report is focused on her work in Ukraine. The whole text of the update is available upon request to those of you interested. At the end of her message, Jennifer writes:
“Would you pray with us, and for us? As I invite you to pray, I also want to make you aware of a wonderful initiative of the Salvation Army. While we are in Kiev challenging and equipping churches there, YOUR church can be part of the International Weekend of Prayer and Fasting for Victims of Sexual Trafficking (September 25-27)! Their website offers some excellent resources to direct or enrich your prayer time. http://www.salvationarmyusa.org/trafficking”

“Christian Preacher Wins Right to Take Case to European Court of Justice” Wednesday, September 16

Andrea Minichiello Williams, Christian Concern for Our Nation, UK, shares:

“A Christian preacher (the Reverend Mahboob Masih - volunteer presenter on Awaz FM) has won the right to have his case referred to the European Court of Justice following an accusation that a state supported radio station aimed at the Asian community discriminated against him because of his Christian beliefs and views.
… The 37-year-old complained to an employment tribunal that he lost this position for reasons related to religion or belief and was thus the victim of descrimination based on his faith as a Christian. The station denied discrimination, arguing the tribunal has no powers to hear the case as Mr Masih was not an employee. In a ground-breaking decision, the Reverend Masih’s case will be referred for a preliminary ruling to the European Court of Justice to decide if volunteers are protected by anti-discrimination legislation. If upheld, the consequences for employers in their dealings with volunteers who are open about their faith could be very significant….

Lawyers of Hope in Rwanda Sunday, September 13, 2009

Claire Wilkinson (Rwanda) from Lawyers of Hope in Rwanda sends us the following updates and encouraging news:

“Lawyers of Hope recently took part in the inaugural Legal Aid Week in Rwanda, designed to raise the profile of legal aid providers and to reach as many people as possible with free legal aid services. Two teams of LOH members spent the week in two prisons in Kigali, giving legal advice and assistance to nearly 400 prisoners. Praise God with us for the opportunity to share the gospel with these prisoners, as well as to provide them with legal advice. One mentally ill prisoner was released as a result of our intervention after spending more than 3 years waiting to appear in court. Please pray for us as we seek to build on this work - we hope to obtain permanent permission to work in prisons in Rwanda and to follow up the most needy cases which we have identified.”
